Best Time to Visit Mexico: Beaches, Cities & Hurricane Season

Mexico is big and varied — coastal resorts, high-altitude cities, and jungle ruins all have different feels — but the dry-vs-wet split is the main thing to plan around.

Dry season (November–April): the best time

Sunny, warm, and low on rain — prime time for the Caribbean beaches (Cancún, Tulum, Riviera Maya), the Pacific coast, and exploring inland. It’s peak season, especially the Christmas–New Year and spring-break (March) periods, which are the most crowded and expensive. Book well ahead for those weeks.

Wet season (May–October): green and cheaper

Hot and humid with afternoon downpours, but mornings are often clear and the landscape is lush. Crowds thin and prices drop outside the holidays. The catch is hurricane season (roughly June–November), which mainly threatens the Caribbean and Gulf coasts — worth factoring into beach plans, with September and October the peak risk.

Altitude changes everything

Don’t assume “Mexico = hot.” The high-altitude cities — Mexico City (2,240 m), Oaxaca, San Miguel de Allende — are mild to cool year-round, with warm days and cool evenings, and are pleasant even in summer. The coasts are where the heat and humidity live.

So when should you actually go?

For beaches and reliable sun, go November–April, avoiding the Christmas and spring-break price spikes if you can. For value and green landscapes, the wet season works if you plan around afternoon rain and hurricane risk on the coasts. The highland cities are good almost any time.
