Best Time to Visit Spain: Seasons, Regions & Crowds

The best time to visit Spain is spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) — warm and comfortable with fewer crowds than summer. Region-by-region season guide.

Quick answer

The best time to visit Spain is spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) — warm, sunny, and comfortable across most of the country, with smaller crowds and lower prices than the summer peak. Summer is hot, especially in the south and interior; winter is mild on the coast and in the Canary Islands but cold in the centre.

Spain covers everything from the green, rainy north to the near-desert south and the year-round-warm Canary Islands, so timing depends a little on region. But for most trips, the shoulder seasons win.

Spring (April–June): the all-rounder

Warm, sunny, and comfortable almost everywhere — ideal for cities (Madrid, Barcelona, Seville), Andalusian sightseeing, and the coast before it gets crowded. Festivals like Seville’s Feria and the spring processions add colour. Prices and crowds are moderate.

Summer (July–August): hot and crowded

The south and interior turn fiercely hot — Seville and Córdoba regularly exceed 38–40°C (100–104°F), and midday sightseeing becomes punishing. The coasts (Costa del Sol, Costa Brava) and the Balearic Islands are in full swing but busy and pricey, and August is when many Spaniards holiday, so some city businesses close. If you go in summer, favour the cooler north coast (San Sebastián, Galicia) or the beaches.

Autumn (September–October): arguably the best

The heat breaks, the sea stays warm from summer, crowds thin, and prices drop. Excellent for cities and coast alike, and it’s harvest and wine season in regions like La Rioja.

Winter (November–March): mild south, cold centre, warm islands

Coastal and southern Spain stay mild and pleasant, and the Canary Islands are warm all winter — a genuine year-round beach option. Madrid and the interior get cold, and the Pyrenees have a real ski season. Great low-season value for cities.

So when should you actually go?

For most trips, choose April–June or September–October. Reserve summer for the north coast or beaches, not the baking interior. For winter sun, head to the Canary Islands or the southern coast.

Frequently asked questions

What is the hottest part of Spain in summer?
The southern interior — cities like Seville and Córdoba — regularly exceed 38–40°C (100–104°F) in July and August. The northern coast (San Sebastián, Galicia) stays much cooler and greener.
When is the best time for the Spanish coast?
Late spring and September offer warm, swimmable seas with fewer crowds than July–August. September is especially good, with the sea still warm from summer and prices easing.
Is Spain warm in winter?
The southern coast and, especially, the Canary Islands stay mild to warm all winter, making them genuine winter-sun destinations. Madrid and the interior, however, get cold.
