Cool season (November–February): the best time
Peak season, and rightly so. Temperatures are at their most comfortable, humidity drops, and rainfall is low — ideal for beaches, islands, and exploring Bangkok and the north (Chiang Mai). It’s also the busiest and priciest, especially around Christmas–New Year. Book ahead.
Hot season (March–May): intense heat
Temperatures climb, often above 35°C (95°F) with high humidity, peaking in April — which is also when the Songkran (Thai New Year) water festival takes over the country in mid-April, a highlight if you time it deliberately. Otherwise the heat can be draining for temples and cities; the islands stay appealing.
Rainy season (June–October): green, cheap, and quieter
The southwest monsoon brings rain, usually as heavy afternoon or evening downpours rather than constant grey. The landscape is lush, crowds thin, and prices fall. September and October are the wettest. Note the coasts differ: the Andaman side (Phuket, Krabi) is wettest roughly May–October, while the Gulf side (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan) sees its heaviest rain later, around October–December — so you can often dodge the worst by switching coasts.
So when should you actually go?
For the best weather, go November–February and book early. Come in April if you want Songkran, and expect heat. Travel in the rainy season for lower prices and green landscapes — and pick the drier coast for your dates.
